Emma, una modesta criada que sirve en la casa de una gobernanta retirada y William Jones, el heredero de una familia de nuevos ricos que lucha por hacerse un lugar entre la alta burguesía.
El joven William Jones, uno de los antiguos alumnos de Kelly Stownar, la señora a la que sirve Emma, se enamora perdidamente al tropezarse con la hermosa protagonista de esta historia.
Sin pensar en el estatus ni en las convenciones sociales y amparándose en los cambios que vive su mundo en esa época, William corteja a Emma sin reparos.
La joven criada corresponde a los sentimientos de William, pero sabe que existe un gran muro que les separa.
